BD Vascular Access Management, enabling patient safety from insertion to removal

Symposium 1:

Title: Best Practices in Vascular Access Management - A Proven Approach to Improving Patient Care

Time: 13:00-14:00
Location: Vandsalen

Chair:
Prof. Mauro Pittiruti, Italy
Speakers:

Prof. Mauro Pittiruti, Italy
Anne Leitch RN, UK
Lise Axford RN, UK
Dr. Thomas Gale, UK

Presentation:

Peripheral vascular access is a routine procedure that is conducted worldwide, it is estimated that 60-90% of hospital inpatients will require an IV catheter1. However routine doesn't mean low risk, as 35-50% of peripheral catheters have to be removed prematurely due to catheter related complications such as dislodgement, occlusion, phlebitis, infiltration, extravasation or infections impacting the standard patient care and outcome for the patients1-2. In Europe, evidence based guidelines developed for the prevention of catheter related complications ensure clinicians follow the best clinical practices to reduce complications and ensure patient care.

Timing:

13:00 Welcome & Introductions
13:05 European experts' consensus on peripheral VAM (VAD selection, insertion, care and maintenance) based on the most recent evidence is a key success for standardizing best practices
13:20 How a collaborative approach with hospitals to providing best practice compliance monitoring can improve practice and patient outcomes
13:35 Peripheral Inserted Vascular Catheter best practice & eLearning programs have a positive impact on clinicians' vascular access management, efficiency, clinical and interpersonal skills
13:50 Q&A and Closing Remarks

Up to 90% of all hospitalized
patients receive an IV catheter
Up to 50% of IV catheters have to be removed
prematurely due to complications4
BD believes that is 100% too much
