The BD Biosciences CoVID-19 response team
Calling all basic and translational researchers working on CoVID-19
The CoVID-19 pandemic poses a massive burden, not only on our healthcare systems but also on our economies. There is now a critical need for basic researchers to create a pool of knowledge that will enable the development of effective treatments and vaccines against the CoVID-19. As of now, numerous issues pertaining to the biology and virology of CoVID-19 need to be studied and addressed.

To enable principal investigators in basic and translational research labs to obtain answers to key scientific questions, BD Biosciences is building a pan-European, multi-disciplinary CoVID-19 response team.
Comprising of BD application specialists in flow cytometry and Multi-Omics, this team will provide researchers with technical support and knowhow to gain insights into important scientific aspects of CoVID-19 virology.

Name: Serge Scherrer Title: Multiomics Field Applications Specialist, BD Biosciences Europe
Background and role in the team: “After my US PostDoc in Protein Science and Cellular Biology, I have been supporting several omics technologies across Europe as applications scientist. At BD Biosciences, I currently enable our South European Scientists with their Single-Cell Rhapsody projects and studies. Within the CoVID-19 Response team, I will be a member of the technical/scientific Team”.

Name: Jens Fleischer Title: Application Consultant, BD Biosciences EU
Background and role in the team: Jens holds a PhD in Immunology and Cell Biology and has been working in T-cell and Macrophage biology. He has been supporting flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting in the BD Biosciences business for over 20 years. In his role as Application Consultant BD Biosciences EU, he supports high-end flow cytometry customers in instrument and reagent choice, grant applications, and choosing data analysis tools. Within the CoVID-19 Response team, Jens will assist in technical/scientific support together with other BD colleagues in the team.

Name: Simone Guenther Title: Multi-Omics Leader Europe, BD Bioscience
Background and role in the team: Simone holds a PhD in genetics. She has a track record of more than 20 years of a career in the Life Science & Health care industry, focusing on implementing new structures & driving new technologies into the market. In her current role she is leading the single cell Multi-Omics Business in Europe for BD. Within the CoVID-19 response team, she will be leading the team together with Cormac Smith.

Name: Tina Van Den Broeck Title: Scientific Affairs Manager, BD Biosciences EU
Background and role in the team: Tina holds a PhD in Immunology and has a broad interest in the role of our immune system in health and disease. In her role as Scientific Affairs Manager BD Biosciences EU, she supports and coordinates research collaborations BD Biosciences has with universities/small companies throughout Europe, both BD sponsored studies as well as BD-involved European H2020 or country-specific grant programs. Within the CoVID-19 Response team, Tina will assist in technical/scientific support together with some other BD colleagues in the team. On top, she will ensure that the correct processes are followed in case of grant/sponsor proposals.

Name: Annette Meyer Title: European Technology Center (ETC responsible
Background and role in the team: Responsible for the European Technology Center (ETC) Heidelberg, where we give customer demos for all BDBiosciences High End Instrumentation.
My role in the team will be to coordinate customer projects and lead them toward the right contact persons within BD.”

Name: Gianluca Rotta Title: Product and Scientific Affairs Manager Research solution, BD Biosciences IT
Background and role in the team: Gianluca has a degree in Biotechnology and a PhD in Immunology. He has deep expertise in the field of multicolor flow cytometry, immunology, circulating endothelial cells and extracellular vesicles. He also has a basic knowledge in multiomics science. In his role of Scientific Affairs he is committed to make BD the partner of choice for customers in their biological research . Within the CoVID-19 Response team, Gianluca will provide technical/scientific support together with the other BD colleagues of the team.

Name: Nicolas Zucchini Title: Application Specialist Manager, BD Biosciences France
Background and role in the team: Nicolas holds a PhD in Immunology and worked on understanding the innate immune system in response to viral infection with a focus on cytokine production. Based on his previous research experiences and all technical skills developed at BD, in his role of Application Specialist, he shares daily with flow cytometry users his technical knowledge and his advices. With his colleagues, in this new CoVID-19 response team, Nicolas will contribute by supporting researcher in order to provide them some advice on technical approaches and on flow cytometry panel design.

Name: Serena Di Cecilia Title: FlowJo European Application Scientist
Background and role in the team: Serena holds a PhD in Molecular Oncology and a strong interest and experience in biomarkers discovery/analysis of hematological and cancer diseases by multi-parameter flow cytometry and Next Generation Sequencing. In her role as FlowJo European Application Scientist she supports and train the users in the use of the FlowJo and Seq-Geq software and contributes to the development of new tools and platforms collaborating with the Bioinformatic and software engineering teams. Within the CoVID-19 Response Team, Serena will guarantee data analysis technical support and on top, ensure a correct knowledge and use of High Parameter Data Analysis software available within BD.

Name: Mark Dessing Title: Business Development & Product Manager High End Cytometry
Background and role in the team: Mark is a long time flow cytometrist with knowledge in cell sorting and cell analysis, especially in the immunology field. After managing several core facilities in Amsterdam and Basel, he joined BD to setup the European Technology Center in Basel with a primary focus on research applications in flow cytometry. His primary focus within the CoVID-19 Response team will be to evaluate technical requirements for instruments used in CoVID-19 related research. Mark’s direct contact with BD’s R&D department, especially the SORP group (Special Order Research Products), will help get technical solutions to the field in an efficient manner.

Name: Paola Bruno Title: Scientific Support Team Leader
Background and role in the team: Paola has a PhD in Molecular Medicine and a Master degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology. In her current role Paola is managing the EU BDB Scientific Support, a team of multilingual specialists with a strong scientific background, dedicated to remotely support customers in the EMEA region on BD Life Sciences on BDB applications and reagents with focus on immunology and flow cytometry. In addition, they provide technical remote support on the BD Accuri flow cytometers. Within the CoVID-19 Response team Paola will provide in-house application and reagent support in coordination with her team and other BD functions, like sales, field application specialist and marketing

Name: Gemma Coma Title: European Product Manager for Life Science Research Reagents
Background and role in the team: Gemma holds a PhD in Immunology and a Masters in Marketing. With a strong background in Flow Cytometry, Scientific Support and multicolor panel design, she is now supporting and driving marketing strategies for BD Biosciences Research Reagents in EMEA. Within the CoVID-19 Response Team, Gemma will support on stock levels, logistics and new product development for Research Reagents.

Name: Varvara Mikolajczyk Title: BD Multi-Omics Customer Concierge
Background and role in the team: Sarvara has a commercial excellence and analytical background across BD Life Science division. As a customer concierge she’s providing an operational support inside of BD as well as to the customers with orders coordination and any other non-scientific activities. Within the CoVID-19 Response team, Varvara will collaborate with a technical coordinator on requests documentation and supply chain partners to secure a smooth and fast project delivery.

Name: Cormac Smith Title: Research Platform Leader Europe, BDBioscience
Background and role in the team: Cormac holds a PhD in Chemistry. He has worked in the Life Science & Health care industry for the last 15 years, in both the Diagnostics and Research segments. In his current role he is leading the BD Bioscience Research Platform in Europe. Within the CoVID-19 response team, he will be leading the team together with Simone Guenther.
