The BD symposium at ESCMID Global 2025
The BD symposium at ESCMID Global 2025
Transitioning from manual methods to full automation in microbiology is no longer a trend, but a necessity. Our speakers will share challenges and successes on the journey towards automation and its impact on diagnostic efficiency and resource management. Insights into efficiency improvements, economic benefits, and organisational impact will be discussed through a Health Technology Assessment (HTA) approach. Additionally, the importance of a Lean approach to optimize Laboratory Performance Indicators (LPI) will be discussed, focusing on continuous improvements and waste reduction.
We are pleased to announce that Prof. Jacques Schrenzel, Bacteriology and Genomic Research Labs, Geneva, Switzerland, will serve as ESCMID-appointed Chair at our symposium. Please see our speakers below.
Industry appointed Chair
Dr. Croxatto is the director of the Microbiology Department at the foundation admed (www.admed.ch) specializing in clinical diagnostics and various R&D projects, including laboratory automation, imaging analysis, artificial intelligence, antibiotic susceptibility testing, mass spectrometry, serology and PCR based assays.
He has extensive experience in medical microbiology, having worked at the Lausanne University Hospital before joining admed in October 2021.
Modernising microbiology: the multidimensional impact of automation assessed by HTA
Lucrezia Ferrario is a research collaborator and faculty member at the LIUC Business School, where she lectures on "Health Technology Assessment and Data Science in Healthcare" as part of the Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering. She also coordinates the Healthcare Datascience LAB - HD LAB at LIUC - Università Cattaneo.
Lucrezia conducts research and training activities focusing on economic evaluations in healthcare and HTA methods.
Optimizing automation: Efficiency gains through continuous LEAN improvement
Andrew Bamber is the Laboratory Managing Director at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL), overseeing 679 staff across four sites and providing comprehensive laboratory services for multiple hospitals. He has a background in microbiology and has held numerous leadership roles, contributing significantly to regional and national pathology initiatives, including the UK Covid response.
Innovative imaging: completing the automation transformation
Dr. Vermeiren is the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Microbiologist at Shared Hospital Laboratory at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. She is actively involved in research focused on evaluating diagnostic testing strategies for the purpose of improving patient management and laboratory workflow and participates in both local and national collaborative studies.
