Turning insight into impact: Optimising bloodstream infection diagnostics with performance metrics

20 April | 13:30–15:30 | Hall A1–3

Widespread inconsistencies and delays in sepsis and bloodstream infection diagnostics remain a critical challenge. This symposium explores the current status of diagnostic pathways across Europe and the clinical challenges posed by delays and suboptimal processes while highlighting how performance metrics and data can help close these gaps.

Meet the speakers

Dr Christian Scheer, University Medicine Greifswald, Germany

Microbiological diagnostic capacity for sepsis: insights from the European Sepsis Care survey

Since 2012, Dr Scheer has been part of the sepsis research group and the award‑winning quality‑improvement initiative “Sepsisdialog.” His work focuses on sepsis quality improvement, and he has contributed to multiple national research efforts, including the German National Pandemic Cohort Network. Dr Scheer is also a member of the European Sepsis Alliance working group and serves as Principal Investigator of the European Sepsis Care Survey project.

Dr Climent Casals, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Spain

Impact of delayed diagnostics: the role of clinical microbiology

With advanced training from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD from the University of Oxford, Dr Climent Casals has led influential research in proteomics and systems biology to advance biomarker discovery in infectious diseases.

Prof Brigitte Lamy, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord / APHP, France

From key performance indicators to combined indicators to improve blood culture practices: the French experience

Trained in Tours, Lyon and at Imperial College London, she works across diagnostics, teaching and research within the IAME group. Her expertise focuses on bloodstream infections and rapid diagnostics. Prof Lamy serves as the French Society for Microbiology’s blood culture referee and chairs the ESCMID Study Group on Bloodstream Infection, Endocarditis and Sepsis (ESGBIES). She also leads key national projects to improve BSI diagnosis in France.

Prof Fabio Arena, University of Perugia / Perugia Hospital, Italy

Informatics for monitoring key performance indicators and continuous improvement: the Italian experience

A double specialist in infectious diseases and microbiology, Prof Arena focuses on antimicrobial resistance, new antimicrobial agents, and innovative diagnostic solutions—work that has led to international patents and several competitive research grants. He is also active in national scientific societies and serves as Editor‑in‑Chief of GImPIOS journal.
