Diagnostic Advances Tackling TB

  • An estimated 1.6 million people died of TB in 2021.2
  • Globally, an estimated 10.61 million people developed TB in 2021.

  • Reduced access to TB diagnosis and treatment has resulted in reductions in the number of people provided with treatment for drug-resistant TB and an increase in TB deaths.1

  • Drug-resistant TB continues to be a public health threat.
  • With the impact of COVID globally estimated multidrug resistant TB/rifampicin resistant TB cases has increased from 437k in 2020 and 450k in 2021.3

The WHO treatment guidelines for isoniazid-resistant tuberculosis recommends for detection of genetic mutations associated with resistance to isoniazid (katG or inhA).4

“Without rapid testing for INH resistance, the appropriate implementation of a reliably effective regimen can be delayed..”5

To support TB surveillance, reporting and treatment, diagnostic tools must provide rapid and accurate detection of TB as well as drug susceptibility testing.
Experts Dr. Hoffman and Dr. Ismail are employing new diagnostic tools to impact TB control in Central/Eastern Europe and South Africa respectively.
